Why can’t people accept that an atheist can die peacefully?

The service for my dad, a die hard atheist, was really lovely yesterday, yet, there were still people doing their best to put him into heaven.

Some quotes I heard…
“Won’t he be surprised when he wakes up in Heaven!”
“I just know god is in charge and is taking good care of him.”
“I saw him at the end and he was smiling — we prayed together, I’m sure he came around.”

And then there was the lady who generously brought flowers for the service, and then put a huge bouquet on the mantle with his ashes. The only problem with that was, the flowers were in a huge vase with a big silver christian cross on the front.

I said, “That is not going to happen.” She said, “Jan, I really want to win this one.”

She didn’t.

I find it amazing that people are adamant and many forced dad to spend his last life force fighting for HIS convictions. Where is the peace in that?

I guess folks have to do whatever they feel they have to do.

Still, I am here to tell you that an atheist can die in peace and should be allowed to.

Plus, a little morphine, a couple of fentanyl patches, and some oxycontin also, tends to give people a peacefully grin at the end as well.

Sigh.

Treatment with various combinations of pain medications allows the palliative care/hospice team to create a comprehensive plan of pain management.

The use of such medications are appropriate measures for end of life care.
Managing pain helps ensure a comfortable process of dying.

Even more appropriate is respecting the wishes of the dying. Some folks could use a bodyguard to manage the pain in the ass religion pushers who take advantage of the bedridden who can’t grab a bible and whack them in the head with it.
