On the back cover of the book is the quote by Publishers Weekly. It says, “Don’t start this compulsively readable book without enough time to read it straight through to the final page.”

I rarely read any book in one sitting, but I Am the Messenger by Markus Zusak took me longer than three long weeks to finish. I would read a page or two and fall straight to sleep. Today, finally I sat on our deck, did my best to stay awake, and turned the last page.

I don’t know who the Publishers Weekly is — but, their endorsement did not ring true for me. The story had potential, interesting characters, and the writing didn’t suck. In fact there were a few really good lines, none of which I circled or can remember now. I will say, for me this was not a compulsively readable page turner. Nope.

Meh – on to the next read.
